FAQ

What is CBD?

CBD (cannabidiol) is a cannabis plant chemical compound. It is a naturally occurring substance that is used to give a sensation of relaxation and calm in products such as oils and edibles. It is not psychoactive, unlike its cousin tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

It's not a stretch to say that one of the most interesting and promising compounds presently undergoing strict medical and scientific research is CBD. In recent years, CBD has produced headlines for some pretty amazing outcomes. Due to the widespread awareness of this amazing compound however, misinformation and confusion about CBD is still prominent.

How does CBD work?

Your body already has an endocannabinoid system that is very complicated, affecting various regions and functions. This system is full of "receptors," sites awaiting the presence of cannabinoid molecules. When the cannabinoid approaches, the receptor binds it to itself, establishing a complex chemical interaction that modern science is only just beginning to scratch the surface of understanding.

Unlike its sister molecule THC, CBD doesn't make you feel high - but don't believe an absence of psychoactive or intoxicating impact means nothing happens. On the contrary, it is very evident that when CBD binds to these cannabinoid receptors, there are many chemical reactions that happen. That said, the endocannabinoid system in the human body is omnipresent, affecting almost all significant functions (particularly homeostatic regulation) in some manner. Because of this, discerning all that CBD does, precisely when the binding happens, is quite a challenge. That’s where the research is at right now: trying to solve that very mystery.

What is CBD oil used for?

CBD hemp oil is merely the hemp plant's natural extracted oil, a non-psychoactive species of the cannabis family. While CBD oil can also be derived from the psychoactive species, these oils tend to contain greater traces of THC, which is not suitable for all consumers of CBD.

The endocannabinoid system of humans, which CBD directly affects, has a profound influence on a myriad of different areas and functions in our body. Therefore, people around the globe are self-administering CBD oil as a supplement to fight a myriad of conditions and ailments.

The fact is that new medical research is conducted on CBD every day, and we don't understand how it works definitively— but the potential is amazing. The financial sector is betting on the ongoing popularity of CBD hemp oil: a Forbes article estimated that by 2020 the CBD market will expand by 700%.

How is CBD extracted from the cannabis plant?

CO2 extraction is the best way to obtain pure CBD isolate in which it exists as a crystal that is clear / white. This technique is preferred to other techniques because in the end product it leaves almost zero traces of chemical contaminants.

Alcohol extraction is another technique in which a liquid such as ethanol, butane, or hexane is passed through raw plant material to remove the CBD and then evaporated to leave only the active cannabinoid This may be a dangerous method as it is likely to leave in the sample surplus traces of butane or hexane chemicals.

Another effective way to extract CBD is to infuse vegetable oil (i.e. olive oil). All you do is grind the raw material of the plant, decarboxylate (heat) it and let it sit for about 2 hours in boiling water.

What serving/dosage of CBD should I take?

This question is a difficult one because it depends on what you use the compound for and how powerful the product is, of course. Most people consume between 10-50 mg of CBD per day total. (For reference, 1 mL of a potent oil may contain 50mg of CBD. Make sure that you read the product label to guarantee a proper serving.
